IIRC, you need to run a recent 2.4 kernel.  2.2 kernels only support
16-bit UIDs, but I believe the 2.4 series supports larger UIDs.

You might also have a problem with NIS, but I can't speak to that.
Haven't tried it.  I have successfully added a local user with a large
UID to at least one of my RH 7.1 systems (running I believe RH's 2.4.3
kernel at the time) not too long ago.
