[Discuss] Ordered a New Laptop

My old laptop is showing too many worrisome signs of failing, so a
Framework 13 should be on its way to me soon. Now I am suffering over
how I want to set it up.

I think I will use btrfs on top of an encrypted LVM device, and boot off
of a removable volume (micro SD or USB), making my laptop itself
completely encrypted. (The /boot volume isn't sensitive in the sense of
my having personal data stored there, but it is sensitive in that I want
to be able to trust holds what I put there.)  So I have been reading up
on btrfs…

Moving on to a different question for opinionated folk: Recently I saw
some posting about what Linux distributions people use on their
Framework machines, and I was startled to see that Debian was way down
the list. Any recommendations for what distribution a long time Debian
user might like better in this year 2024?

- Maybe one that isn't systemd-based?

- One that has MATE desktop environment because I *like* menus, and hate
the phone-envy UI that Ubuntu seems to have popularized.

- Conservative about what packages they allow in, and not bleeding edge
in releasing new versions.

- Has long support schedule so I don't need to do a big revision change
often.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

-kb
