Which was required once the DARPA/NSF subsidy ended, in part because Rest of World complained that The Internet was being run as a subsidiary of the US Gov, and in part because it wasn't experimental anymore and thus no longer needing subsidy.

Oh yeah I remember the Rest of World (lol) complaining.  Good point.  Are things better?  Maybe we need a radical shift away from these folks.  🤔   There are some neat alternative DNS projects about.
