I got a private reply on how to create bootable images of the (tiny little)
root-volume backups that I've never figured out how to do.

Passing along Rich Pieri's helpful suggestion for benefit of the list:
> Create a base installation with everything, create a master image of the
> device with Clonezilla, then rsync or rsnapshot any changes to a file
> server from cron. To restore? Restore the Clonezilla image then restore
> the most recent copy.
