If you're going to be managing a Subversion server for a whole company /
team of developers then you may enjoy the benefits that a packaged setup
offers. The two biggest vendors in the space are CollabNet (original svn
company) and WANDisco.

You can download and install the (free software) CollabNet Subversion Edge
which packages up the underlying Apache and Subversion plus includes the
ViewVC repository browser and a web-based management application for
managing the entire setup. The biggest advantage is managing users through
the web-based console (compared to managing users via command-line).
Everything else can be managed through the web-based console too: repos,
hooks, backups, configuration settings. And, they package up new releases
into an installer so keeping everything running and up-to-date is a breeze.
Installing on a host with an existing Apache is really not a problem since
the defaults for Collabnet use non-standard ports (e.g. 3343).

If you prefer to manage from the ground up, I like the WebSVN
http://www.websvn.info/features/ repo browser better than ViewVC.
