The issue (generalizing) is that the Display Manager (GDM) owns the
keyboard, mouse and the display. Your process would need to be a client
of the display manager or X server.
One possible way is to set up a client in /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients.d or
in ~/Xclients. You could figure out a way to communicate between your
service and your xclient, possibly by a named pipe.
