Last year I was convinced I'd eventually shift from emacs to acme, to
the point of even buying a better mouse, but so far I only use it for
very light editing and more as a command shell and file manager. If you
don't already know about it, it might be worth checking out if you're
interested in something different:

Guaranteed it won't feel sluggish (though you might until you get used
to it).
