This maybe true to some time ago. Seeing the advancements that Ubuntu has made,
I would gladly install it for a novice user .
However , Fedora's Gnome 3 , I was embarrassed to offer people to use it.
The questions I heard were " but, where are the icons ? but , where
are my running programs ",
"So, after the OS install is done, a whole chapter of configuring
add-ons and extra's start, just
so I can ever use the computer right ?"
It is a major step back.

My impression was , that , the developers made Gnome 3 for people that had
never used a PC before, and , that have no point of reference. If Gnome 3 was
the first system you've ever used, you may have not disliked it,
because, well, you
knew nothing before that. If you've used Mac OS, Windows, KDE / Gnome 2,
unless you're a remarkably patient person, you would have had some negative
feelings towards it .
