it's been interesting to follow the discussion on gnome3,
which i personally found annoying in the extreme (gnome3,
not the discussion). charlie bennet mentioned xfce, which
sounded good, and finding it a part of xubuntu, i thought
i'd give it a try -- lightweight is good.
i put xubuntu 12.04/xfce on my asus and was quite pleased --
no problems -- think i'll stay with it until i see something
better.
however, when i installed it on my acer aspire, i must have
screwed up somehow. when i tried to login via the gui, it
went off into never, never land -- blue xubuntu screen, no
response from anything.
i fumbled through grub recovery, remounted /, reset the
password for moylan, but no go. while in recovery as root,
i did set up a root password and found later that i was able
to login via the gui as root, and from there to su into
moylan. helpful, but no way to live.
also i was able to login just fine via the text screen
obtained via ctl-alt-F2.
hmmm ... struggle, struggle.
############### your laugh for the day! ################
hot damn -- i tried the login once more just to make sure i
wasn't saying anything stupid, and .... it now works! i
know it didn't first thing this morning, and i didn't do a
damn thing. you won't believe that, of course, and frankly,
neither do i, but there it is.
i hate it when this happens.
