I seemed to remember having read about SAS/SATA compatibility not
being 100%. This page
put up by Adaptec

makes it clear it isn't 100%. In the "Physical layers" section, it
makes it clear that SAS drives
will NOT plug into SATA controllers, but SATA drives can plug into SAS
controllers. (SATA signals
are a subset of SAS signals.)
