I use pfsense on a used laptop that I bought with a broken screen, that I
bought for $50.  The hard part was:  A laptop naturally has 1 nic built-in.
I needed a 2nd nic in order to do anything interesting with routing.  It was
difficult to find a pcmcia nic which was supported.
