Active Directory connectivity and disconnections

Hello to all:

Time to revisit this problem - An Ubuntu or RedHat/CentOS system is
configured and is successfully added to a Windows AD domain. The
configuration is through modifying native config files - not through
Likewise.

Now, whether the network fails or the system is a laptop off of the
network, the user tries to log in with their cached credentials and is
immediately blocked from being able to authenticate.

Log files reveal the inability to authenticate.

I've read several recent posts saying somewhere between Kerberos and
winbind, and maybe samba, cached credentials are not successfully
being handled to permit proper offline logins.

Does anyone know of a workable solution?

I've tried Likewise but wasn't completely thrilled with it.  I prefer
my manual solution.

We know it is not limited to a distro, because two distros, debian and
redhat based, both experience the same issue.

Thanks for any insights.

Scott
