The quickness aside, the actual advantage to Free and Open Source is
that if the problem is sufficiently bothersome, you have the right to go
out there and either fix it yourself or hire someone capable of fixing
it.
The speed is probably a result of that, someone else investing time or
money into the problem.
In all other respects, it's best not to think of these patches as a free
service.
