Let me answer some of these questions as a residential (not business 
class) FIOS user...

Since I'm on DHCP, I have an external server I use for relaying e-mail 
out to the Internet.  So far, no incoming (SSH,HTTP{S}, IMAPS) has been 
blocked.

At install time, the installer recommended I use the wireless router box 
thing they provided for free and I could call later to get the port on 
the ONT working.  About two months later, the router box died for some 
reason.  While debugging that, I asked they switch over to using the 
Ethernet port on the ONT which they did fairly quickly.  As it turned 
out, the problem was somewhere outside the ONT so switching to the 
Ethernet port didn't work.  Once the service came back a few hours 
later, things have been working fine.
