BIND directory /var/named/pz

It seems that many installations of BIND put the master zone files in
/var/named/pz,
and slave zone files in /var/named/slaves.
How did the directory name "pz" come to be chosen and get adopted so widely?
Several google searches turned up a lot of tutorials that used /var/named/pz,
but I can't find a link explaining the rationale for the name.
