My experience with a certification was pretty positive.
In the 1990s, when I left a VAX/VMS job after ten years, I took a Unix
training program through BU and applied for a sys-admin job at a
research company.
That certification got my resume passed through HR to the hiring
manager, who gave me a phone interview, and then an in-person one. And
I worked there for 13 years, in a good company with low turnover.
Bottom line: just because HR is somewhat bureaucratic, that doesn't
imply that the company stinks.
