As I said, you can configure NM to do that.  You do need to log in on
the console the first time, but then you can just Edit Connections ->
[Wired] -> System eth0 -> Edit   and then select Connect automatically
(and possibly the Available to all users).

True.  You can also still use /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and tell it to NOT use NM..  But then you'll possibly need to enable the
"network" service on startup.
