Securely backing up Linux machines to NAS?

I just set up a WD MyBook WE to back up about 500GB of data from our NFS
server. I decided to use rsnapshot primarily because it is already a
proven backup system that uses ssh and rsync. The newer MyBooks come
with both rsync v3 and ssh installed, so adding software from optware is
pretty straightforward. I used to use a shell script for the purpose,
but I prefer something that uses a configuration file. The MyBook can
use encrytion keys and ssh to the main server. So, now I have most
everything backed up on the main server, so the task now is for the IT
guys in NY to send me a dist so I can backup the backup volume so they
don't have to pump 500GB down a 2Mbps pipe. (Regus just got a new,
faster system, but we are now capped at 2Mbps shared. I'm discussing our
options with Regus to upgrade).
