I thought so, but I suspect the reason why it might have worked then, 
and doesn't work now, is because the hardware changed, rather than the 
software having broken. It seems most of the time when hibernate/standby 
fails, it's when resuming, and the hardware doesn't get reset. Which 
devices and how they get reset is a moving target.

Only recently have I had occasion to try it out, and on my Acer Aspire 
8930 it failed to re-enable the video after resuming from suspend. (I'm 
not sure I tried hibernate.) Some research showed that it should be 
possible to resolve the problem by tweaking the config or scripts that 
are run on resume to reset the video card, but I haven't been adequately 
motivated enough to suffer through the pile of reboot cycles that will 
be required to fix it. (The lack of working session management makes me 
even more reluctant, as once I have a session set up the way I like it, 
I tend to avoid rebooting.)

I guess I'd start by troubleshooting why shutdown is failing. If you 
can't get that to work, a software shutdown triggered on temperature may 
not work either.
