Virtualizing a running system

The way I have done this in the past is to:

0) Shrink the windows partition to the size it will have in the VM,
make video display driver generic VGA.
1) Backup the windows partition using partimage or Clonezilla.
2) Install the desired OS and VM manager
3) Boot Ubuntu or Clonezilla in a new VM, restore the image from #1 to the VM.
4) Wrestle with Windows to work on the new (virtualized) hardware and
go through Windows Authentication.

Worked for me. YMMV.
