We use pfsense on a pair of regular 1U servers for our firewalls and
very basic tcp load balancing to nginx and perlbal (depending on the
application).
Cheap, and for us it works great. We use nginx for SSL stuff and
perlbal for regular http.
We send all cacheable requests through a CDN and have less than 5
million requests a day in each datacenter, but the boxes involved
(real and Xen) all have basically 0% load.
I like the "all user servicable parts" approach better than "get
something used and cheap on eBay"...
Coyote Point is a relatively low cost option if you want commercial
support.
