One company to stay far, far away from is NPSIS.com. They used to be
the best in the business, but they were sold and under the new owners
they're become as bad as they once were good.
The original NPSIS spoiled me. I got used to being able to speak on the
phone to someone who had serious Unix expertise. I've been a software
engineer myself for decades, so I didn't need help most of the time, but
when I did it was about some difficult and complex problem.
Since NPSIS went bad, I've been using *hostforweb.com*. They're not
quite as good as NPSIS used to be. You can't talk to their
knowledgeable people on the phone. You can only communicate with them
via trouble ticket. That can sometimes be a problem, but I haven't
found any other hosting company that makes their Unix experts available
for phone discussions.
When I've submitted trouble-tickets to hostforweb.com, I've usually
received a response in about 1/2 hour, and my problems usually get
solved pretty quickly.
Also, they allow access to a Unix shell via ssh which most companies
don't, and they don't require you to fax your driver's license to them
before granting you shell access like hostmonster.com does.
All in all, I'd say my experience with hostforweb.com has been quite good.
