| everything and ``lease'' certain services out to ``service providers''
| (maybe better thought of as vendors), then turn around and sell their
| own services for less.  It's up to you, do you want to have to call
| the monopoly, or the business that depends on your money to survive?

We have speakeasy on our Verizon phone line, for thre reasons. One is
kinda  strange:  Verizon  said we were too far for DSL, but speakeasy
said "Yeah, no problem." Why speakasy can do it over a  Verizon  line
when  Verizon  can't  isn't obvious, unless Verizon was simply lying.
Also, Verizon is known to block ports,  but  speakeasy  doesn't,  and
they encourage running your own servers.

The third reason is that the few times  I've  talked  to  speakeasy's
support  people,  when  I  tell them I have a linux firewall, I could
hear the smiles on their faces.  They instantly switched to geek mode
and  told me what I wanted to know without the usual baby talk.  It's
nice to know that there are helpful, cooperative people  available to
help with problems.

OTOH, I haven't called them in a few years, so I don't know what they
might be like since their merger with Best Buy. ;-)
