As noted, LDAP is a common (and good) solution to this type of
challenge, especially when you have a single enterprise (domain) and
need to integrate with non-web applications.
Depending on what you are asking, you may want 'Single Sign On' that
spans multiple domains. You'll want to check out some things like
OpenID, SAML or PubCookie under the general name of 'Single Sign On'
