In my neighborhood in Newton, neither FIOS nor DSL is available. We
were one of the first communities to be wired for cable Internet and I
have had cable since around 1994 or 1995 when Continental cablevision
was Highway 1, then changed its name to MediaOne. I looked into
switching on a few occasions, but I've found that for me Comcast has
been extremely reliable. Prior to Comcast, I would have a few occasional
outages, but I don't recall a single outage in the past 2 years. I
switched to Comcast Digital Voice after some research, and have been
very pleased with it. Note that my Verizon phone service was of poor
quality. When they blamed it on my household wiring, I disconnected the
house at the junction box and spoke to service from a phone connected
to their wires. For TV service, I have a DVR that provided HDTV. 

Now that Verizon has a service that can compete head-to-head with Cable
TV the competition can only be good.
