V7 user/dict/words can be a little weird, not having plurals and
infinitives, because the spell program did stemming, and having
technical terms common at Bell Labs in the 70's. However, many linux
distros have followed Gnu/FSF in using Webster 2nd Ed wordlist
("web2") as /usr/share/dict/words instead of the v7 'words' file.

V7 or Web2 are probably good enough for most spelling purposes, but
there are multiple other  wordlists  are better for word-puzzles etc,
and thus are collected at National Puzzlers' League, e.g., Moby.

Currently, files are only available via BitTorrent; FTP & HTTP
downloads are not working.
However, Web2 and Web2a are available from Gnu/miscfiles
