And it is a flawed argument for the above reasons. The
"only" reason people can come up with is that it is
"good enough," but that requires some understanding
and quantification of "enough" that I submit has not
been achieved.

may i rephrase your argument?  what u really r saying
is, there is no situation where mysql is good enough. 
because if the 'dev' knew more (s)he wouldn't have
picked mysql!

because you feel so strongly about this, even though i
currently have no _need_ for another database, i will
check out others, just for information purposes.  u
win vs me.  this time...
