nfs?

What are people using these days to export/mount remote filesystems  
amongst UNIX/OSX systems?  NFS?  I haven't had a need to use NFS in  
several years and I just tried setting it up again.  After exporting  
the filesystems (/etc/exports, exportfs) on the server and running  
mount on an OSX client, I'm getting an error message that I've never  
seen before.  I just need to get basic exporting and mounting  
working.  I can handle making it permanent via NetInfo, etc...  I  
tried disabling the firewall so it's not a firewall problem.  I  
suspect I need to run some service or configure some security  
permissions or such.

# mount myserver:/somedir /somedir
NFS Portmap: RPC: Program not registered

BTW - If there's a better system than NFS that works on both Linux  
and OSX, I'd like to hear about that too.  I am using this for large  
audio/video files.
