Serial-Attached-SCSI could be useful here.  I'm forwarding your email
to my buddy Peter Petrakis who works on high-performance storage
drivers in the Linux kernel.  He always has a good sense of that stuff
at the low-level.  Of course, he is a kernel hacker :-)
