I assume you don't want to dd the entire driver because you'll lose your
data?

Nope.  Standard PC MBR is first 512 bytes of the disk (0x0000 - 0x01ff).
  The partition table starts at 0x01be and goes +0x0064.  Didn't you
guys ever get an old MBR virus back in the day!???!?!
