Debian or Ubuntu?

Is that particularly meaningful? Either system can be installed using a
single CD installer, with any remaining packages being downloaded. At
least I assume this is still true of Debian. It was something I didn't
know at the time I first installed Debian, and I wasted time downloading
and burning 6 or 7 CDs...and that was back before BitTorrent and you had
to use some oddball tool for downloading the ISOs in chunks.

Debian still seems to be growing in market share, but it is more on the
server side. Many ISPs have adopted it.

If the recommendations on this list remain consistent, the consensus
will be to go with Ubuntu for a desktop system.
You'll see various reasons cited as to why Ubuntu might be a better pick
for this application, but the real question to ask is what is a
compelling reason to use Debian as a desktop?
