"vi" is short for *vile*.
Alas, it is usually the default editor on many distros, and just knowing how
to exit from it is quite a challenge.
First thing I do on a new installation is install emacs! Then I have to reset
all them there editor environment variables to use the REAL editor!
eVIl indeed.
One lovely feature Emacs has that I don't think vi(le) does is Registers. I
can pop a complicated layout into a register and pull it up later, with the
memory of my position in all the files maintained.
And so we can get into a nasty "can vi do THIS..." flame!
Actually, I wonder if vi can do anything Emacs can't do -- besides give you a
headache if you aren't a vi acolyte!
