VMware and backups

I've been looking through my backup logs, and I noticed that amanda has
difficulty with the VMware directories on my desktop, where I run VMware
Workstation for the things that require MS Windows.

It occurs to me that backing up the raw VMware directories is probably
not the most effective way to back up VMware guests, much like backing
up the disk partitions of an Oracle database wouldn't generate a useful
backup to restore from.

How do other people handle backups for VMware guests? What would be
considered Best Practices for this?
