This is my totally irresponsible undependable and unknowledgeable tip:
If you want something as close as possible to what you meet in your possible
job -- install something RedHatish (Fedora or something else -- somebody
else will chime in, I have left RH world couple of years ago). I don't like
RedHat, have some technical opinions why I prefer Debian, but the truth of
the matter is that they are everywhere and the difference is not that
important.
If you want something really good go for Kubuntu (or Ubuntu -- if you need
your Gnome-fix). It is Debian for desktops, the community is fun,
distribution as whole is well maintained, and I think there is a future in
it. However, I am afraid, that still most of the companies -- especially in
US -- consider Unix to be either Solaris or RedHat.
And now all of you who knows better flame me to death :-).
Best,
Matěj

<Overfiend> Don't come crying to me about your "30 minute
compiles"!! I have to build X uphill both ways! In the snow! With
bare feet! And we didn't have compilers! We had to translate the
C code to mnemonics OURSELVES! And I was 18 before we even had
assemblers!
