Jerry - this isn't working on my system.  Example:
[jkinz at redline jkinz]$ cat foo
text
text
text
text
[jkinz at redline jkinz]$ cat foo | sed -e "s/^/\n\n/"
nntext
nntext
nntext
nntext

Note - no new lines.  also tried 
's.  Any ideas as to what in the
local environment might cause this?  

my LANG=en_US
