Wireless OpenBSD coverage

I heard he quit after the team didn't want to go looking for insecure 
code.  Also I'm under the impression that the other BSDs use a closed 
source firmware which OpenBSD refused to use.  They reverse engineered 
what was needed and open sourced it.

am I off?
