I can't help you with the hardware part, but I have recently compiled
a script that turns a .avi file into a dvd image and burns it to dvd.
This works on my Debian unstable system. I got the information for
writing it off the net, and just did "apt-cache search <program-name>"
for all the programs that weren't installed.
The dvd's I write seem a bit flakier on my dvd player than the ones I
get from Netflix, but I'm not sure if that's a hardware or a software
problem. The symptom is that the dvd player spends a while loading
the dvd, and sometimes gives up, although the same disk other times
will load and play fine.
