What's the state of Palm<->Linux these days?

Once upon a time I carried a Palm Pilot.  (To give you a timeframe,
we're talking about PilotPro/PalmIII/IIIfx/IIIc timeframe).  At the
time I recall the ability to sync with Linux in any meaningful way was
difficult, at best.

I'm thinking about getting a device, most likely something with Wifi
(like the Tungsten C).  Although I have a windows desktop at home that
I can use as a primary syncing station, I do have 3 other Linux
machines that could benefit from having access to the device.  Have
some reasonable advances been made in syncing Palms with Linux?  On a
wifi PDA is it reasonable to assume that I would be able to at the
very least backup my data over the wifi connection to pretty much any
machine of my choosing?  I dont want to carry my life around on the
device and not have a backup.  I don't really nede the ability to
create appointments on the desktop and push them, only to archive them
from the device to the desktop.

Ultimately I just want it for an organizer so that I stop forgetting
about all my phone calls and appointments.  I'm out of that "unless I
can write the next killer app for it I don't want it" phase of my
programmer life :).  But given that I have wifi at home and work I
would certainly love to be able to fire up the occasional ssh session
or maybe even a VNC.
