I also suggest you save a copy of the options. I install a new kernel
like this:
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/linux-2.4.19
cp .config /boot/linux-2.4.19-config
cp System.map /boot/linux-2.4.19-System.map
Then I can grep for options, compare options between two kernels, etc.
