Knoppix is a Linux distro that runs off of CD-ROMs - no local installation
required. Kind of like the good old days of running MS-DOS from floppies,
but much, much nicer!
Unlike small "rescue" distros such as Tomsrtbt or Lnx-Bbs, Knoppix
is a highly loaded distro you can use for serious work - it even has
StarOffice. The idea is that you can walk up to a strange machine
anywhere, pop in the CD, boot it up, and do useful work in Linux.
