Microsoft pressured Dell to discontinue Linux support

Companies like Compaq and HP are interesting in that they are major PC
vendors as well as major Unix vendors. IBM is also a major PC and Unix
vendor, but they have been sparring with Microsoft for years.
The end result remains to be seen, but I think that Microsoft will continue
to dominate the OS business on the desktop. I don't know if they will be
able to beat Unix at the high end. But, I sure see Linux benefiting from
some a settlement.
