You can control this in your .exrc file. 
I'm not sure if Frank could actually use vi from his AS400 system. It is 
worth a try. Since navigation can easily be done with the hjkl keys, if he 
can use vi in full screen mode, then the major task is simply to remap the 
escape to some other character that is not eaten by the terminal emulaiton.
