adding a user

Hi,

I am operating as root to a linux box that I have. I want to create
another user id for myself so that I don't have to log in as root
everytime. When I do 
adduser xyz
it says:
adduser: cannot create directory /home/xyz
Can anybody guide me how to do this. I hope I got my question clear.
