/etc/password and /etc/shadow problem resolved

Hello to all:

I'd like to thank everyone who responded.   Using the responses, I took a
closer look at the entries in each, and tried to simply remove my manual
entry from /etc/passwd and just use useradd to have myself added.  Once
that was done, I was able to log in.

Simple solution, but a good learning experience anyway.
