I think Chris' point is valid--the Cablemodems and ADSL aren't really that
useful for hosting servers. I hosted an SMTP box on ADSL with a static
IP, and that was acceptable, but not commercial quality (this is PacBell
in San Francisco). I wouldn't have done anything that required immediate
response.
I really gave it up though, because I did not like managing the security
of servers at yet another site. I now have my domain hosted at pair.com
out of Pittsburgh, (I think), and for $9/month, I get email and a small
site. If you pay them more, you can do fairly complex stuff, CGI, SQL
backend, etc. I originally did it as a temporary thing as I was moving,
but it's so easy and cheap I left it up there.
