External USB hard drives

Has anyone had any good experiences hooking up an external USB hard
drive. I was looking at some and they require MacOS or Windows98 making
me wonder if this isn't another WinModem type device.

And in a related question, has anyone had any experience with the NIC
Computers put out by Larry Ellisons little company NIC? I am considering
buying one and hooking up the USB hard drive although I don't have a
clue if that will work.
