You could have just lied. :)

By the way, you don't actually need TCP/IP to access the HP JetDirect.  It
supports Unix-style TCP/IP, but it also supports Novell-style IPX and
ancient Windows-style NetBEUI.  If you don't need the data routed, then
NetBEUI would work just as well for this.  You are better off having
TCP/IP installed on an NT machine, though.
