I don't know if everyone knows about this or not, gtk+ but it's an mpeg player.
 What makes this one different are two things:
1 - frame rendering is handled via plugins (it ships with OpenGL, X11, and SDL)
2 - The current CVS version has experimental support for MS-Windows Codecs.
      So it should eventually have full .avi support.
