I am currently planning another installfest for either Late Feb or early
March baring a blizzard. I'll get that firmed up within the next week.
As an answer to STephen's questions. I routinely install stuff that are not
part of the SuSE distribution. Since SuSE distributes an export version of
Netscape, I routinely download netscape into some download directory,
such as /usr/local/src.
I then unzip and untar it. Netscape comes with an install script and a
README. The install script is ns-install.
Since SuSE use rpm, you can install software that is in an rpm by either
using YaST or simply RPM.
rpm -U ftp.foo.bar:/pub/package.rpm
Or if you need to build a package, download, unzip and untar a source
package. Most come with configure. In general, cd to the aprpopriate
source directory. Read the aprpopriate readme files. SU, the run
configure and make.
./configure
Normally this sets up the environment and makefiles to properly build the
product and install in /usr/local.
You can change the exec-prefix and lib-prefix if you want to install to
another location.
After configuring, build the binaries by running make. I normally run make
followed by "make install", but if the make files were structured correctly,
just running "make install" should do the trick.

Dear Boston Linux and Unix user Group,
I recently purchased SuSE Linux 6.3.
I had no problems with the installation and I've been using Linux for
about 4 weeks now. I am finding difficulty installing applications that
didn't come on the SuSE distribution CD-ROM's and don't use the YaST
installation tool. I am wondering if I can learn how or meet people
willing to talk about or help with installation problems.
Thanks for any information.
Regards,
Stephen.
