Stupid Pseudo TTY question

I just upgraded to the 2.2.13 kernel, and when trying to use ddd to debug I 
get a message:
(gdb) cannot open master pty: No such file or directory
(gdb) communication setup failed        
I have Unix98 PTY support configured.
I can run ddd if I set user to root. 

I'm running SuSE 6.3 with KDE.
